ImmiAccount is the Australian Department of Home Affairs online portal for many visa and citizenship applications. You can use it to prepare an application, upload supporting documents, read correspondence and follow your application's progress.
To get started, open the official ImmiAccount login page, select Create ImmiAccount, verify your email and follow the registration prompts. You will also need to complete the required security setup, including multi-factor authentication.
This guide explains how to create an ImmiAccount, sign in, link eligible existing applications and resolve common access problems. If you searched for "immi account", you are looking for the same service: the official name is ImmiAccount.
What can you do through ImmiAccount
Depending on your application, ImmiAccount lets you start or continue an online form, attach evidence, manage payments and view correspondence. After submission, you can check progress and use available functions to update information.
However, having an account does not establish eligibility for a visa. Before completing a form, read the requirements for the relevant visa subclass and stream, whether that is a skilled visa, a partner visa, a student visa or an employer-sponsored visa. Your location, current visa, previous immigration history and supporting evidence can affect the options available to you.
Also distinguish between an application and a granted visa. ImmiAccount helps you manage applications. VEVO provides information about your current visa and its conditions, including work or study restrictions.
What you need before creating an account
Have an email address you control and can continue accessing. Home Affairs uses your account email for notifications such as password recovery, so a temporary work or education email may be inconvenient if you later lose access.
Keep your personal details available and prepare a secure place to store your username and recovery information. You will also need access to the authentication method required during setup.
Use a trusted device and allow enough time to finish registration. Creating the account and preparing a visa application are separate tasks; you do not need every supporting document simply to open an account.
How to create an ImmiAccount step by step
Step 1: Open the official registration page
Visit the official ImmiAccount portal and select Create ImmiAccount. Check that the login address is online.immi.gov.au before entering personal information.
Step 2: Verify your email address
Enter your email address and request a verification code. The registration page asks you to enter that code on the following screen. Keep your inbox available and check your junk folder if the message does not arrive.
Step 3: Choose the appropriate account type
Home Affairs offers individual and organisation access. An individual account is generally appropriate when applying for yourself or helping a family member. Organisation access is available for organisations, sponsoring companies and registered migration agents — relevant if you are being nominated through an employer-sponsored pathway. Select the option that matches your role.
Step 4: Enter your details and secure the account
Complete the requested personal and account details. Follow the current username, password and security-question requirements shown on screen. Store recovery information securely and use a password you do not use elsewhere.
Step 5: Complete registration and authentication setup
Read and accept the applicable terms, complete the verification prompts and follow the multi-factor authentication instructions. Home Affairs' current login guidance uses a six-digit code from an authenticator app. Follow the options presented for your account rather than relying on older screenshots.
The Home Affairs account creation guide is the starting point if you are unsure which access type to choose.
ImmiAccount login and multi-factor authentication
For your next ImmiAccount login, enter your username and password at the official portal, then complete the authentication prompt. Under the current access instructions, you enter the six-digit code from your authenticator app and submit it.
An authenticator code changes regularly. If it is about to expire, wait for the next code before entering it. Make sure you are using the entry associated with your ImmiAccount.
After signing in, review your application list and relevant correspondence. Sign out when finished, especially on a shared computer. Do not give another person your password, recovery answers or authentication codes to help them access an application.
How to link an existing application to ImmiAccount
An application lodged previously, or through another account, may be eligible to appear in your own account. Home Affairs calls this importing an application. Its application management guide also explains sharing applications and sending incomplete applications between accounts.
The general process is:
- Log in and select the application import option.
- Have the acknowledgement letter and application reference available.
- Enter the reference and applicant details requested by the import screen, matching the lodged application.
- Confirm the details and check whether the application appears in your list.
The required fields and availability depend on the application. A transaction reference number, or TRN, identifies an application transaction; it is different from your ImmiAccount username. Some import processes also require identity details such as a date of birth or passport information.
Not every application can be imported. If yours is unavailable, check its specific instructions or ask the person managing it about sharing access. A blank application list alone does not tell you whether an earlier application was lodged or decided.
Avoid submitting a duplicate application just because you cannot see the original.
Starting and submitting a visa application
Once you have confirmed the correct application pathway, select the new application option and choose the relevant category. Check the subclass and stream carefully before entering information.
Answer questions accurately and consistently with your records. Where a question asks about previous refusals, travel, relationships or employment, read its wording carefully — a past refusal does not automatically rule out a new application, but it needs to be disclosed and addressed properly; see our guide to visa refusal and review options if this applies to you. Do not leave out information merely because you think it is unimportant.
Save your progress and review the completed form before submission. Check names, passport details, dates and declarations, as well as the evidence supporting your answers. If someone prepares the form for you, ask to review it yourself.
Follow the submission and payment instructions applicable to that application. Keep the acknowledgement, payment receipt and a copy of the submitted form where available. A saved draft is not evidence that an application has been submitted.
Uploading supporting documents
The application form tells you which documents to attach and whether they are required before or after submission. Follow the requirements for your particular application, including any translation instructions.
Prepare readable scans with complete pages and clear file names. Check the file type and size limits displayed in the upload screen. Attach each item to the correct applicant and document category, then confirm it appears in the attachment list.
Keep your own secure copies. Home Affairs states that supporting documents cannot be accessed from ImmiAccount after uploading, and documents cannot be attached to finalised applications. Its document attachment guidance also tells applicants not to email documents.
If you receive a request for further information, read the full letter. Identify what is required, how to respond and the stated deadline before uploading your response.
Checking progress and updating your details
Use ImmiAccount to check the application status and correspondence after submission. The Home Affairs after-you-apply guide identifies the available functions, including updating details and withdrawing an application.
A status label is not a substitute for reading the decision letter. Likewise, an unchanged status does not provide a reliable date for a decision. Check correspondence regularly and keep copies of requests and responses.
If your passport, contact details or circumstances change, follow the relevant notification instructions. Updating your account email and updating an application's contact information are different tasks; check both where necessary.
If an agent manages your application, agree who will monitor correspondence and make updates. Coordinate changes so that information supplied to Home Affairs remains accurate and consistent.
Common ImmiAccount login problems and solutions
Forgotten username
Select the forgotten username link on the login page. Enter the email address associated with your account and follow the recovery email. If you have forgotten both credentials, recover the username first.
Forgotten password
Use the forgotten password link and enter your username. Home Affairs sends recovery instructions by email. Follow the identity checks presented and set a new password. Avoid repeatedly guessing your credentials.
Lost access to your authenticator app
Select the login-page option for losing access to your multi-factor authentication app. Home Affairs says this process requires your password and correct answers to your secret questions, followed by setting up MFA again.
Missing emails or technical errors
Check spam folders and confirm you are checking the correct inbox. For website errors, review maintenance notices and the common issues guide.
If the problem remains, use the ImmiAccount Technical Support Form. Explain the problem clearly and retain the error message. This form is for technical issues, not visa eligibility advice or application-status enquiries. If a deadline is approaching, obtain advice promptly rather than assuming the problem gives you extra time.
Frequently asked questions
Is creating an ImmiAccount free?
Yes. Creating an account is free. Visa or citizenship application charges, payment surcharges and professional service fees are separate. Check the applicable charges before submitting an application.
Can I create an ImmiAccount outside Australia?
Yes. The online account can be used from overseas. However, whether you can lodge a particular application while outside Australia depends on that visa's requirements. Account access does not establish eligibility.
Is my ImmiAccount username always my email address?
Do not assume they are the same. Use the username associated with your account. If unsure, the official username recovery process uses your registered email address to send instructions.
Can I use one account to help family members?
Home Affairs allows individual accounts for family members helping applicants. Whether relatives can be included in one visa application depends on that visa. Sharing an account does not automatically combine separate applications.
Can I see an application lodged by my migration agent?
Ask your agent about sharing it with your account. Home Affairs encourages registered migration agents to share applications with clients. Importing may also be available, depending on the application type and circumstances.
Does importing an application change my migration agent?
Do not treat importing or sharing access as changing your appointed representative. If you want to appoint or end an appointment, follow the relevant Home Affairs notification process, including Form 956 where applicable, and clarify who will receive correspondence.
Can ImmiAccount show whether I am allowed to work?
Use your visa grant notice and VEVO to check your current visa conditions. An application receipt or a pending application in ImmiAccount does not, by itself, establish permission to work.
What if my application has disappeared?
First confirm you signed into the correct account. Check with anyone managing the application and review available sharing or import options. Do not assume it has been refused, withdrawn or cancelled solely because it is missing.
Does using a migration agent make processing faster?
An agent can help prepare and manage an application, but cannot promise a faster Home Affairs decision. Be cautious about guarantees of approval or claims of special access to decision-makers.
Can Nanak Migration help before I submit?
Yes. Contact Nanak Migration to arrange a consultation about your visa pathway, application requirements or concerns before lodgement. Explain any previous refusal, current deadline or change in circumstances when booking so the discussion addresses your situation.
